The temple, in the \b \cf4 \ATXht1107 Doric style\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 , was erected on the summit of the Ac
ropolis. The building stood on a platform with three steps and was surrounded on all sides by a row of columns. The colonnade supported the entablature made up of \b \cf1 \ATXht13 metopes\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 and \b \cf1 \ATXht20 triglyphs\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 .
On top of this, on the short sides, stood the pediments. Inside, the temple was divided into two parts, the naos and, behind it, the \b \cf1 \ATXht15 opisthodomos\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 , where the thesaurus of the goddess was located. At the back of the naos,
right in the middle of the building, stood the enormous chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos (Virgin Athene), carved by \b \cf2 \ATXht16 Phidias\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 . \par
